The tragic case of a prisoner with mental health issues who physically blinded himself while in jail was brought up today in the Justice Committee. The Head of Northern Ireland's prisons, Sue McAllister was called before the committee to respond to allegations of shortcomings within the Northern Ireland Prison system recently. The blinding of the prisoner comes on the back of a poor inspection report on Maghaberry prison and a host of other problems - such as drugs in jails.
The Head of the Prisons service was questioned vigorously by the Justice committee to try and get to the bottom of perceived shortcomings.
