Gay marriage rights are back on the agenda again. A Sinn Fein / SDLP motion was debated today over Gay rights - It produced a majority vote in the NI Assembly for the first time. It also included some passionate debate from both sides. Of course a majority in NI doesn't mean much. The DUP placed a Petition of Concern which vetoed the motion as predicted. However, it was an important milestone and shows the pressure on the DUP. Mike Nesbitt, who admitted his views were on the 'wrong side of History' abstained from the vote as did an SDLP opponent, Alban McGuinness. The actual use of the petition of concern has been as much a talking point today as the vote. It has been claimed on Slugger O Toole website that the Petition of Concern are actually pre packaged and ready to be used when the party decides - This will add fuel to the fire of the argument for reform.

I believe the DUP are justified in standing up against same sex marriage as it has some negative effects on the children . Marriage is supposed to be a union between a man and a woman with the purpose to procreate . Same sex marriage is a contradiction of marriage as it is unable to produce children and creates a sterile union . Furthermore it is in the childs best interest to be raised by their natural mother and father and they may face difficulties if they do not have a mother or father figure to look up to . Is it right to deny them of this ? Also if homosexual marriage is accepted a step for sexual freedom what arguments can stop other forms of unnatural behaviour ? In northern Ireland same sex marriage has been democratically voted against 4 times before November 2015 by a single majority vote I think its about time the focus is taken off this and on to something more important as they have already got civil partnerships - just my opinion

Actually the majority was in favor for same sex marriage, just the DUP's petition of concern blocked it.

First of all I'd like to make it clear I'm not having a go at you just trying to maybe open your mind a bit, In reply to your claims that marriage is supposed to be a union of man and woman with the purpose to procreate, there is no mention in the official definition of marriage nor societies idea of marriage which says that the couple have to procreate, for one, if a man and woman chose not to procreate no one would think anything of it, so what is your argument that same sex couples should be treated differently, simply because they cannot. Furthermore the human race was created by whatever or whoever with a desire to procreate, survive and thrive and so it has become expected by people like you who think "everyone who is married should have children" and that their is anything wrong with a sterile union, but in a world with a dangerously increasing population and (although most people don't seem to grasp this) limited space and supplies, do you really think it is of the utmost importance that every couple procreate? I would have to disagree there. In response to your claim that "it is in the childs best interest to be raised by their natural mother and father" do you think that same sex couples regularly go about with a massive butterfly net and steal away the children of heterosexual couples? No. The children that are most likely adopted by same sex couples most likely do not have the option to be raised by their natural mother and father you Rodney, they offer orphans who might stay in foster care their entire childhood a chance at a happy life with two caring guardians to look after them. You offer that same sex marriage has been voted against four times IN THE PAST (one of politicians favourite little trump cards) well what would you say to the fact that in the most recent vote a majority of politicians in the assembly voted FOR same sex marriage? Not to mention the fact that in surveys in recent years more than two thirds of NI have stated that they would be comfortable with someone they know having a same sex marriage. I hope this answers some of your questions and helps you uncloud your hazy mind, feel free to respond, peace out

Excellent point above, there's nothing wrong with a child having to live with same-sex parents.

Not every child is raised with a father and a mother, whether their parents are straight or gay.
